Abu Dhabi GP: Verstappen saves best till last to take pole

In the first runs of Q3, Valtteri Bottas looked in control with a tenth advantage over Max Verstappen, who split the Mercedes. But Max Verstappen pulled it out of the bag at the end, with an incredible lap to take his first pole position of the season ahead of Valtteri Bottas in second and Lewis Hamilton in third. Lando Norris pulled off an incredible lap at the end to set the fourth fastest time ahead of Alexander Albon in fifth and Carlos Sainz in sixth. It was another great qualifying for Daniil Kvyat to qualify in seventh ahead of Lance Stroll in eighth, Charles Leclerc in ninth and Pierre Gasly rounds out the top 10.

The big shock of Q2 was Daniel Ricciardo who could not progress into Q2 despite being on the soft tyres. He starts just behind his team-mate Esteban Ocon who also failed to make it. Disappointing qualifying considering their pace during the weekend. Sebastian Vettel qualified in thirteenth ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi in fourteenth, whilst Sergio Perez opted not set a time due to his engine penalty.

Whilst out of Q1 went Kimi Raikkonen, Kevin Magnussen, George Russell who could not repeat his qualifying heroics over the season, Pietro Fittipaldi and Nicholas Latifi, who spun as he tried to start his second run.

Here is the provisional starting grid for tomorrow’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
