Max Verstappen took pole position to the delight of his home crowd after a barnstorming final lap which saw him take the top spot. Lewis Hamilton pulled off an incredible final sector but it was not quite enough to take the top spot. Valtteri Bottas qualified in third ahead of an incredible qualifying session from Pierre Gasly in fourth.
The two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz qualified in fifth and sixth respectively ahead of a great qualifying from Antonio Giovinazzi to qualify in seventh. Esteban Ocon qualified in eighth ahead of Fernando Alonso, with Daniel Ricciardo rounding out the top 10.
George Russell pushed very hard but went off at the final corner and was unable to get another lap in as a result of the damage. Lance Stroll qualified in twelfth ahead of Lando Norris, who was unable to get a second flier in as a result of Nicholas Latifi crashing, bringing the second part of qualifying to a close. Whilst Yuki Tsunoda starts in fifteenth.
The big shock of Q1 was Sergio Perez, who failed to make it past Q1 and starts in sixteenth after being unable to get a lap in due to drivers backing up. Sebastian Vettel was blocked by both Haas cars and was unable to get a final lap in. Robert Kubica qualified in eighteenth as Kimi Raikkonen’s replacement, with Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin rounding out the grid.
