Belgian GP: Verstappen takes pole as Russell takes shock front row in wet qualifying

Max Verstappen took pole position at the death, by 3 tenths of a second over a shock performance from George Russell, who was consistently fast throughout the entire session and putting in a shock lap to qualify in a fantastic second.

Lewis Hamilton qualified in third ahead of Daniel Ricciardo, who struggled for most of the day but ending up in fourth place. Sebastian Vettel qualified in fifth ahead of Pierre Gasly, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. Esteban Ocon qualified in ninth with Lando Norris looking like he could be a threat for pole but crashed at Eau Rouge and didn’t set a time in Q3, perhaps will have to start at the back.

Charles Leclerc qualified in a disappointing eleventh ahead of Nicholas Latifi who came close to making Q3 but has to settle for twelfth, but still a great result for the Canadian. Carlos Sainz qualified in thirteenth, completing a disappointing session for Ferrari, ahead of Fernando Alonso in fourteenth, and Lance Stroll in fifteenth for Aston Martin.

Antonio Giovinazzi qualified in sixteenth ahead of Yuki Tsunoda in seventeenth for AlphaTauri, in another difficult session for the Japanese. Mick Schumacher qualified in eighteenth ahead of Kimi Raikkonen and Nikita Mazepin.

Here is the result of qualifying for tomorrow’s race. Note that Valtteri Bottas and Lance Stroll serve 5 place grid penalties.
