In the morning session, Max Verstappen proved that the crash did not hinder him at all. Testing to see if his existing engine survived his Silverstone crash, he ended the session fastest ahead of the two Mercedes’ of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton.
Carlos Sainz set the fourth fastest time ahead of Pierre Gasly in fifth and Fernando Alonso in sixth, despite a spin at Turn 4. Charles Leclerc was seventh ahead of Sergio Perez, Lando Norris and Lance Stroll. Whilst Robert Kubica replaced Kimi Raikkonen in the Alfa Romeo.
The sole red flag of the session came as Yuki Tsunoda backed his AlphaTauri into the barrier at Turn 4, ending his session.
