Robert Shwartzman started in fifth, but after a lightning getaway at the start of the race, where he instantly moved into the lead of the race, he led and whilst at times it looked like second placed Juri Vips was catching him, it was not to be, and Robert Shwartzman took his second victory of the season.
It was a key race in the title race as well, after points leader Guanyu Zhou spun at The Loop on the opening lap, and stalled his engine, putting him out of the race. This brought out one of three safety car periods, the second when Alessio Deledda collided with Marino Sato at Abbey, and the third when Guilherme Samaia spun into the gravel.
Christian Lundgaard took his first podium of the season but after starting on pole may be disappointed with third. Felipe Drugovich finished in fourth ahead of Theo Pourchaire in fifth place.
Sixth went to Sunday pole sitter Oscar Piastri after a fight with Liam Lawson, whilst Dan Ticktum took the final point in eighth. Marcus Armstrong finished in ninth whilst Richard Verschoor has reverse grid pole for today’s second race.
