Austrian GP: Verstappen takes pole as Norris and Russell star

It was Max Verstappen who set the fastest time taking another pole position for Red Bull. It was a close margin though, as Lando Norris almost managed to get ahead of him and steal a shock pole position, and put his McLaren on the front row.

It was a valiant effort from Sergio Perez who starts in third place, ahead of a disappointed Lewis Hamilton who qualified in fourth, and Valtteri Bottas who qualified in fifth. Sixth was Pierre Gasly for AlphaTauri, ahead of Yuki Tsunoda in seventh. Sebastian Vettel qualified in eighth but is under investigation for impeding Fernando Alonso.

Ninth was George Russell, who gets Williams into Q3 for the first time since Italy 2018, and managing to outqualify Lance Stroll, who set the tenth fastest time.

It was a galling session for Ferrari as both cars failed to make it into Q3, with Carlos Sainz qualifying in eleventh and Charles Leclerc qualifying in twelfth. Daniel Ricciardo qualified in thirteenth, another terrible session for the McLaren driver. Fernando Alonso looked set to do a lap good enough to make it, but he was blocked at the last corner by Sebastian Vettel, whilst Antonio Giovinazzi starts fifteenth.

Kimi Raikkonen qualified in sixteenth for Alfa Romeo ahead of Esteban Ocon who once again failed to make it past Q1 and qualified in seventeenth. Nicholas Latifi qualified in eighteenth ahead of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, who round out the grid.

Here is the result of qualifying from Austria.
