It was a dramatic qualifying session that ended through a red flag as Yuki Tsunoda and Carlos Sainz crashed at the end of the session. Charles Leclerc put in a searing laptime which was enough to take pole position, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Pierre Gasly equalled a career best fourth ahead of Carlos Sainz who will be hoping the gearbox is not damaged.
Lando Norris qualified in sixth but is under investigation for a red flag infringement ahead of Sergio Perez in seventh. Yuki Tsunoda will also be hoping his gearbox is not damaged as that would ruin his best ever qualifying. Fernando Alonso qualified in ninth ahead of Valtteri Bottas who struggled and qualified in tenth.
Daniel Ricciardo crashed at the end of Q2 which brought the session to a premature end. This prevented Sebastian Vettel having a chance to get through, he qualified in eleventh place ahead of Esteban Ocon in twelfth. As a result of his crash, Daniel Ricciardo could not improve from thirteenth. Kimi Raikkonen starts in fourteenth ahead of George Russell. It was a monumental effort from the Williams crew to get him out after an engine failure in final practice. He rewarded their efforts with another Q2 appearance.
Nicholas Latifi qualified in sixteenth ahead of the two Haas drivers of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, the latter had a few excursions. Whilst both Antonio Giovinazzi and Lance Stroll had crashes at Turn 15 which brought out the red flags in a heavily disrupted Q1, putting both at the back of the grid.
Here is the provisional starting grid for tomorrow’s Azerbaijan GP.
