It was a sighter session for most but it was Sergio Perez who topped a practice session for the first time in 2021 for Red Bull. He led Carlos Sainz who ended the session second in a mixed session for Ferrari, as Charles Leclerc was unable to get much running due to a gearbox problem.
Max Verstappen ended the practice session third ahead of Pierre Gasly in fourth and the two Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas finishing in fifth and sixth place. Lando Norris was seventh ahead of Sebastian Vettel in eighth for Aston Martin.
Yuki Tsunoda had a good first session at Monaco in ninth with Kimi Raikkonen rounding out the top 10. It was a difficult session as normal in Monaco, even Fernando Alonso made a mistake, hitting the wall at Anthony Noghes.
