Spanish GP: Hamilton outstrategises Verstappen to win in Barcelona

For a while it looked like it might be a procession but when Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton pulled the trigger, it turned the race on its head and it was a replay of Hungary 2019 as Lewis Hamilton managed to chase Max Verstappen down to take the lead and a third victory of the season. Max Verstappen had to settle for second, pitting to take the point for fastest lap.

Verstappen took the lead with a bold overtake and led the way until Lewis managed to take the position, and will be disgruntled to miss out on the win. Valtteri Bottas finished in third having not moved over for a charging Hamilton as quick as he would’ve wanted.

Charles Leclerc drove a solid race to finish in fourth, ahead of Sergio Perez who spent much of the race stuck behind Daniel Ricciardo but eventually managed to get through and finished in fifth place. Daniel Ricciardo finished in sixth ahead of Carlos Sainz in seventh, completing a good race for Ferrari.

Lando Norris finished in eighth, with Esteban Ocon finishing in ninth, having lacked the sufficient race pace to maintain his good qualifying. Whilst Pierre Gasly won a fierce battle for the final point to finish in tenth.

Lance Stroll just missed out on points to finish in elveventh ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in twelfth and Sebastian Vettel in thirteenth. George Russell looked like he had a chance of points but finished down in fourteenth after running out of tyres.

Antonio Giovinazzi finished in fifteenth after a weird tyre mix-up in the pitstops where a punctured tyre was almost fitted. Nicholas Latifi finished in sixteenth ahead of Fernando Alonso in seventeenth, having ran in tenth for most of the race but ran out of tyres at the end. Whilst the two Haas drivers rounded out the finishers. The race’s only retirement was Yuki Tsunoda, who’s car shut down and brought out the safety car early on.
