Spanish GP: Hamilton takes 100th pole in close session at Barcelona

It is Lewis Hamilton who just took pole, becoming the first ever driver to hit 100 pole positions. Once again it was the first runs that made the difference as no one could improve in the second runs. Max Verstappen was just 3 hundredths off Lewis Hamilton and he will start second, ahead of Valtteri Bottas in third.

It was a good session for Ferrari, with Charles Leclerc qualifying in fourth ahead of a great showing for Esteban Ocon in fifth place. Carlos Sainz qualified in sixth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in seventh.

Sergio Perez spun on his first run and he missed out on setting a laptime when the track was at its best, qualifying in eighth. Lando Norris qualified in ninth with Fernando Alonso rounding out the top 10.

Lance Stroll just missed out on Q3 to qualify eleventh ahead of Pierre Gasly in twelfth, in a disappointing session for AlphaTauri. Sebastian Vettel qualified in thirteenth for Aston Martin, with Antonio Giovinazzi in fourteenth, whilst George Russell gets to Q2 once again, qualifying in fifteenth.

Yuki Tsunoda was the big shock of the first part of qualifying, failing to make it past Q1. He qualified sixteenth ahead of Kimi Raikkonen in seventeenth. Mick Schumacher did a solid job to outqualify the Williams of Nicholas Latifi, whilst Nikita Mazepin starts at the back of the grid.

Here is the provisional starting grid for tomorrow’s Spanish Grand Prix.
