It was Valtteri Bottas who hit the ground running in a fairly formulaic first practice session in Barcelona. He led Max Verstappen by less than a tenth of a second, with Lewis Hamilton third fastest, over a tenth off his team-mate.
Lando Norris had a good start to the weekend, ending the session fourth, ahead of the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Pierre Gasly set the seventh fastest time ahead of a good showing from the Aston Martin of Sebastian Vettel.
Sergio Perez had his final lap disrupted finishing in ninth, with Lance Stroll rounding out the top 10, an improved showing from Aston Martin.
Alpine struggled, ending fourteenth and fifteenth. Roy Nissany was in the Williams for the first practice session, and Robert Kubica was in the Alfa Romeo, although he beached his car in the gravel, bringing out the red flags. Nikita Mazepin also had an off early in the session but managed to recover.
