Portuguese GP: Mercedes on top on first day of running at Portimao

It was a solid start to the weekend for the Mercedes team, with Valtteri Bottas topping the first practice and Lewis Hamilton ending second practice on top.

However Red Bull have made it clear that they are a threat. Max Verstappen was second fastest in both sessions, with Sergio Perez ending the first practice session in third, before having a slightly off showing in the afternoon session.

Ferrari showed good pace with both cars finishing in the top 10 in both sessions, whilst McLaren had a slightly off day. But the surprise of the day was Alpine, who may cause some concern for those at the top of the midfield if a fifth and a sixth in second practice is anything to go by. George Russell was also a surprise in the morning session, ending seventh fastest for Williams. Whilst AlphaTauri had a slightly off afternoon, neither car getting into the top 10.
