Valtteri Bottas topped the timesheets at Imola in the morning session, half a tenth ahead of his team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who was in turn 17 thousandths ahead of Max Verstappen in the Red Bull.
Charles Leclerc set the fourth fastest time ahead of Pierre Gasly in fifth, Carlos Sainz in sixth. Fernando Alonso was seventh ahead of Lance Stroll and Nicholas Latifi with Daniel Ricciardo ending the session tenth.
It was a difficult morning out there with teams struggling to get temperature in their tyres. Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon had contact at Turn 4, whilst Nikita Mazepin had a couple of adventures.
