The second race proved to be a frenetic one from the get go, as contact at the first corner took two key contenders, in the form of Robert Shwartzman and Dan Ticktum, out of the race. Juri Vips led from pole but was then passed by Guanyu Zhou. He was looking good for the victory but a late safety car caused by contact between Felipe Drugovich and Liam Lawson, taking the latter out of the race, brought out the safety car for the second time and putting him in the clutches of those who did a pitstop.
Juri Vips looked like the one that would pass him for the win but a car problem halted his charge, putting Oscar Piastri in the box seat. In a thrilling final lap between him, Christian Lundgaard who had a time penalty for taking out Lirim Zendeli, and Guanyu Zhou, who did everything to keep the lead, Oscar Piastri managed to muscle his way through and take the lead. He would take his maiden Formula 2 victory, ahead of Zhou and Jehan Daruvala.
Richard Verschoor fought his way to fourth from the back of the grid ahead of Theo Pourchaire in fifth place for ART, also fighting his way from the back. David Beckmann finished in sixth ahead of Marino Sato in seventh, Matteo Nannini in eighth, Christian Lundgaard’s 10 second time penalty drops him to ninth, with Marcus Armstrong rounding out the top 10, dropping back after not pitting.
Guilherme Samaia finished in eleventh ahead of Bent Viscaal and Gianluca Petecof. Felipe Drugovich dropped down the order after being on the wrong tyre compound, with Roy Nissany, Juri Vips and Ralph Boschung rounding out the finishers. Alessio Deledda, Liam Lawson, Lirim Zendeli, Robert Shwartzman and Dan Ticktum were the race’s retirements.
Here is the classification of the second race of the championship.
