Abu Dhabi GP: Verstappen dominates processional race at Yas Marina

It was not a race that is going to be remembered as a classic but it saw Max Verstappen take his second win of the season and his first since the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, ahead of the two Mercedes’ of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton.

Max Verstappen got the start he needed, managing to stay in front heading into the first corner and not looking back, managing the pace and winning convincingly. Valtteri Bottas held second the entire race but never looked a threat to the Red Bull driver. Whilst Lewis Hamilton finished in third after what he described as a tough race.

Alexander Albon finished in fourth having closed the gap to Lewis Hamilton but was unable to make the move stick, but still drove a very solid race. Lando Norris finished in fifth ahead of Carlos Sainz, who has an investigation looming over him but even a 10 second time penalty would keep him in sixth place. This crucially means that McLaren have taken third place in the constructors championship.

Daniel Ricciardo pulled off a great first stint by going long which enabled him to finish in seventh place. Pierre Gasly pulled off some exciting overtakes which enabled him to finish in eighth place, ahead of Esteban Ocon, who passed Lance Stroll on the final lap, putting the final nail in the coffin when it came to Racing Point’s third place in the constructors, after Sergio Perez retired from the race early on due to a mechanical failure whilst he was progressing through the field, the Mexican was the race’s only retirement.

Ferrari made a huge strategical mistake staying out after the safety car that resulted from Sergio Perez’s stoppage, which effectively summed up their season.

Here is the result of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
