Lewis Hamilton is a seven time world champion! And he secured it with one of the best drives of his Formula One career, making his intermediate tyres last to take an unlikely race victory.
At the start of the race, conditions were very tricky and full wets were the way to go. The Racing Points started well, but Verstappen dropped back. Whilst Valtteri Bottas had a shocker, spinning twice on the first lap, the first time in avoidance of a spinning Ocon and the second time after contact with the Renault driver.
Sebastian Vettel had made a great start and worked his way up to third, however he was overcut by Max Verstappen during the switch to intermediates. Lewis Hamilton had dropped to sixth after a mistake trying to pass the Ferrari, dropping him behind Alexander Albon.
Meanwhile back at the front and Lance Stroll was holding strong at the front, ahead of his team-mate Sergio Perez. But Verstappen was catching and he went for a bold move at Turn 11, but had a high speed spin, which dropped him to sixth. He had to pit after a flat spot from the spin, seemingly taking him out of contention. Alexander Albon also had a spin when looking in contention for a win.
There was a second round of pitstops for intermediate tyres, however Lance Stroll’s race began to unravel, as his pace following the pitstop was not as strong and he fell down the order. Whilst Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez stayed out and many believed the chances of them making the end on those tyres were small. However they had effectively turned to slicks on a drying track, and Lewis had nursed his tyres expertly. He crossed the line to take a stunning victory, which secured him a seventh world title!
There was action at Turn 12 on the final lap, as a rampant Charles Leclerc, who had great pace throughout the race and had worked his way up to third had his sights set on Sergio Perez’s second place. However he ran wide, which allowed his team-mate Sebastian Vettel through into third to take his first podium of 2020, behind Sergio Perez, who takes his first podium since 2018.
Leclerc finished in fourth ahead of Carlos Sainz, who had solid pace in the final stint to finish in fifth ahead of a disappointing result for Red Bull, Verstappen finishing sixth and Albon finishing seventh. Lando Norris finished in eighth ahead of Lance Stroll, who fell to ninth in the end. Whilst Daniel Ricciardo finished in tenth. It was a miserable race for Valtteri Bottas, who had multiple spins and did not finish in the points.
Lewis Hamilton has now secured that seventh world title and has now matched Michael Schumacher’s record.
