Portuguese GP: Race Preview

Formula One returns to action this weekend for Round 13 of this 17 race season, heading to the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal for the first ever time for a race weekend, playing host to the first Portuguese Grand Prix since 1996 in Estoril.

The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve is located in the town of Portimao in the Algarve region of Portugal. Having been built in 2008, this 4.693 kilometre circuit is no stranger to Formula One, having been used as a testing venue a decade ago. The circuit itself is like a rollercoaster, consisting of 15 corners and many elevation changes.

Here is a track guide, which contains a video lap of this rollercoaster of a circuit.

The obvious overtaking opportunity around this circuit is that of the main straight, the only DRS zone on the circuit, which should give the drivers the opportunity to make a pass once they are close enough. However due to the flowing nature of the circuit, following other cars is not expected to be easy. However in qualifying trim the cars should be extremely exciting to watch, particularly the Mercedes, which will likely be in its element around the varying sweeping bends at this circuit. The question is, how close can Red Bull get, and who will exit this weekend on top in the close fight for third between Racing Point, McLaren and Renault?
